How many steps a day should you walk?
Short answer: about 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day if you're under 60, and 6,000 to 8,000 if you're 60 or older. Put in your age and your current steps for a personal goal and a weekly ladder to reach it.

Studies don't agree on one magic number, but they agree on the shape: steep benefits early, then a plateau. Slide to any daily step count to see what the evidence says at that level.
Near the average · Tudor-Locke class: Low active
Typical adults average 4,000 to 5,000 steps. In Paluch et al. (2022), the least active quarter averaged about 3,500 steps a day; moving up from there showed the steepest drop in risk.

Recommended steps per day by age
| Age | Daily steps | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Children 6 to 11 | 11,000–12,000+ | Tudor-Locke et al. 2011 |
| Teens 12 to 17 | 10,000–11,700 | Tudor-Locke et al. 2011 |
| Adults 18 to 59 | 8,000–10,000 | Paluch et al. 2022 |
| Adults 60+ | 6,000–8,000 | Paluch et al. 2022 |
| Limited mobility / chronic illness | 3,500–5,500 | Tudor-Locke et al. 2011 |
What do step counts say about how active you are?
Researchers Catrine Tudor-Locke and David Bassett proposed five simple step-defined classes for adults in 2004. They are still the most widely used shorthand:
| Class | Steps per day |
|---|---|
| Sedentary | Under 5,000 a day |
| Low active | 5,000 to 7,499 |
| Somewhat active | 7,500 to 9,999 |
| Active | 10,000 to 12,499 |
| Highly active | 12,500 or more |
Steps are only half the story: pace
Walking at about 100 steps per minute is roughly moderate intensity for adults (Tudor-Locke et al., 2019). Ten minutes at that cadence is about 1,000 steps. A daily 30-minute brisk walk therefore adds around 3,000 steps and, on its own, meets the WHO recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate activity a week. Check your pace with the walking time and cadence calculator.
How to raise your daily steps without noticing
- Take a 10-minute walk after each main meal: about 3,000 steps, and a known help for blood-sugar spikes.
- Walk during phone calls; a 20-minute call is 1,500 to 2,000 steps.
- Fix your weakest weekday first. The tracker's weekday chart shows which one it is.
- Park or get off transit one stop early; every extra 500 m is about 650 steps.
Questions people ask
How many steps should I walk a day?
For most adults under 60, about 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day is where large studies see the biggest reduction in risk of early death. For adults 60 and over, the benefit levels off at about 6,000 to 8,000. If you are well below that, any increase helps: start about 1,000 above your current average.
Is 10,000 steps a day necessary?
No. 10,000 began as a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing number. It is a fine target for many people, but research shows most of the health benefit arrives earlier, especially for older adults.
Is 7,000 steps a day good?
Yes. A 2021 JAMA Network Open study of middle-aged adults (Paluch et al.) found people averaging 7,000 or more steps a day had a 50 to 70% lower risk of dying over about 11 years than those under 7,000.
What is the average number of steps per day?
Studies of pedometer data put typical US adults at roughly 4,000 to 5,000 steps a day, and a 2017 Stanford smartphone study (Althoff et al., Nature) found a worldwide average of about 4,960.
How many steps a day for seniors?
About 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for adults 60 and over, based on the 2022 Lancet Public Health meta-analysis. People with limited mobility benefit from smaller targets; even going from 2,000 to 4,000 is meaningful.
How many steps a day for kids?
Research by Tudor-Locke and colleagues links about 11,000 to 12,000 or more steps a day with children meeting the recommended 60 minutes of daily activity; for teens around 10,000 to 11,700.
