Each footprint is one step. Taller legs cover more ground per step, so a 6′2″ walker needs roughly 300 fewer steps per mile than someone who is 5′2″. Walking faster also lengthens your step a little; strolling shortens it.

The formula

miles = steps × step length (in) ÷ 63,360. Step length is the distance from one heel strike to the next heel strike of the other foot. A stride, strictly, is two steps (left plus right), though many apps say "stride" when they mean step.

The height rule (step ≈ 0.413 × height for women, 0.415 × height for men) is the estimate used by many pedometer makers. It's typically within about 10% for normal walking. For accuracy, measure: walk 10 relaxed steps on a known distance and divide by 10, or walk a 400 m track and count.

Questions people ask

How many steps are in a mile?

About 2,000 to 2,500 steps for most adults walking at a normal pace. With the common height-based formula (step length = 41.4% of height), a 5′7″ (170 cm) walker takes about 2,287 steps per mile; many trackers default to a 2.5 ft step, which gives about 2,112.

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

Roughly 4 to 5 miles. For an average 5′7″ adult it is about 4.4 miles; taller walkers cover closer to 5 miles.

How many steps is 2 miles?

About 4,000 to 5,000 steps; roughly 4,573 for a 5′7″ walker.

How many steps is 3 miles?

About 6,000 to 7,500 steps; roughly 6,860 for a 5′7″ walker.

Why does my tracker show a different distance?

Trackers use your entered height or a GPS-calibrated stride. If distances look off, measure your step length (walk 10 steps and divide the distance by 10) and enter it in your device and in the converter above.
